Fatimah: Verify authenticity of firms, individuals offering jobs

-

KUCHING: The people are urged to verify the authenticity of companies and individuals offering jobs outside Sarawak.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said by doing so they could lessen the likelihood of being scammed by unscrupulous people.

“It isn’t wrong to look for jobs outside of Sarawak, or even Malaysia, but you should gather enough information about any offers you come across.

“There are people out there who are specially trained to lure others into doing something bad. These people are smart. They even have their own ‘script’ to lure their victims, and preying on the victims’ vulnerabilities,” Fatimah said when met after the Self- Genius programme at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching ( BCCK) here yesterday.

Citing Macau scam, which preys mostly on women, as an example, Fatimah said it was not surprising if such tactics were also used to lure the 40 Sarawakians to go to Cambodia earlier this year.

On the eight Sarawakians who were recently repatriated from Liberia, Fatimah said it was a different situation compared to the Cambodian incident, as nobody had been detained.

“The eight of them had been promised jobs, but upon their arrival in Liberia, they weren’t given what they were promised. To complicate matters, they did not have any money when they wanted to return home.

“Fortunately, our Foreign Affairs Ministry helped in the negotiations until they ( eight victims) safely returned home,” Fatimah added.
