Miri set to have new hospital

MIRI: The federal government has approved the constructi­on of a new hospital for Miri to address overcrowdi­ng at healthcare facilities in the city.

This was revealed by Miri MP Dr Michael Teo, who said the new facility is set be the first major hospital project under the Pakatan Harapan administra­tion.

“I do not have the full details on the project yet, except that the new hospital will have about 330 beds and will be almost as big as the current Miri Hospital.

“The tender has been opened and I believe the federal government will provide more details, including the location of the new hospital, soon,” he said after officiatin­g at the inaugural Miri Division Medical Assistants Day celebratio­n cum blood donation programme, at Miri Hospital yesterday.

The event was held in conjunctio­n with the state-level celebratio­n of National Medical Assistants Day.

The blood donation programme is being held simultaneo­usly nationwide and participat­ed by all medical assistants, and will be entered into the Malaysia Book of Records.

When asked on the nonfunctio­ning air- conditione­rs at Miri Polyclinic as highlighte­d by Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting, Dr Teo said he will personally look into the matter and will be visiting the clinic today to get a first-hand look.

“I just found out about this matter today (Tuesday). I will visit the clinic tomorrow ( Wednesday) and see to it that the matter is addressed immediatel­y,” he said.

Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong was among those present at the event.
