KUCHING: The management of Emart Matang yesterday refuted the news on tuberculosis ( TB) associated with the hypermarket, which has gone viral on social media.

Emart Group of Companies assistant manager (group marketing) Alan Bong assures the public that Emart Matang is safe and free from this disease.

“This statement was confirmed by the Sarawak Health Department recently. Members of the public may contact the State Health Department (via) main line 082473 200 for further clarification,” he said during a press conference at Emart Matang yesterday.

According to Bong, 153 Emart Matang employees have undergone health screening and all of them are confirmed TBfree.

He also pointed out that the claims about two Emart Matang staff members having contracted the disease was ` misleading’, saying that one of them is a former employee who contracted the disease after having resigned from the job, while the other has a medical record related to TB but is not found to be infected by the disease.

Bong also wanted to clarify another news, which has been spreading via WhatsApp voice note message, stating that an Emart employee had succumbed to TB.

“This said information, in Hakka Chinese dialect, claims that an Emart staff member died from TB recently. This, too, is not true,” he said.

In this regard, Bong said Emart Matang would collaborate with Sarawak Health Department and Normah Medical Specialist

Emart Group of Companies managing director Ngu Ting Sii was also present.

For the record, TB is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which usually attacks the lungs but can also damage other organs.

This disease spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, spits, sneezes or talks.

In most cases, TB is curable.
