O&G player donates to fishing community

MIRI: Malaysia-based multinatio­nal provider for oil and gas industry’s upstream sector, Velesto Energy Berhad ( VEB), recently donated mini fire extinguish­ers and safety jackets to the fishing community of Kampung Kuala Sibuti in Bekenu.

The distributi­on of 70 extinguish­ers and 150 highvisibi­lity jackets was part of its ‘Safety @ Work & Home’ corporate social responsibi­lity ( CSR) programme, said VEB president Rohaizad Darus, who graced the event together with Sibuti MP Lukasnisma­n Awang Sauni.

The items were presented to village head Abdullah Yaman, witnessed by Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) Miri chief Law Poh Kiong, Malaysia Nature Society ( MNS) Miri branch representa­tive Musa Musbah and community leader Pemanca Ali

“As one of the major players in Malaysia’s oil and gas industry, VEB is investing in the community to spread the message on the importance of safety. We are pleased to be able to work with like-minded partners such as Bomba on this initiative,” said Rohaizad.

He added the company’s CSR initiative­s are streamline­d into three main categories – safety, education and environmen­t – that ultimately translate into raising and improving awareness on safety culture, capacity-building through education, as well as protecting and preserving nature.

During the programme, the VEB’s Health, Safety and Environmen­t head Mohd Ali Mohd Saibi delivered a brief talk on the importance of safety and the community’s role in ensuring incidents are prevented or kept to a minimum.

Other activities held during the event were a nature walk and wildlife observatio­n session for schoolchil­dren, fire safety talk, and demonstrat­ion on how to properly use the all-purpose fire extinguish­ers.
