PTAs play vital role in schools’ development — Lee
MIRI: Parent- teacher associations ( PTAs) play a vital role in complementing the Ministry of Education to provide an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching for pupils and teachers.
As such, they have a positive impact on the school’s development, said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin.
“The PTA is set up to foster better communication and understanding between the parents and the school teachers.
“With the association, parents are able to know and even participate directly in any activity organised by the school which aims to improve students’ performance both in academic and non- academic fields,” he stated when officiating at the general meeting of the PTA of SK Agama ( MIS) Miri at the school hall yesterday.
Lee’s text of speech was read by Miri City Council councillor Jeffery Phang.
He pointed out that it is important for parents to attend PTA meetings to know happenings in the school and to give input to improve the school and their children’s academic performance.
“Consensus is the key word to the PTA’s success. Besides participating in the election for the PTA’s new executive committee, a meeting like this allows parents to discuss the motions which had been tabled for the meeting.”
In addition to that, he reminded parents that education of their children should start at home.
Thus, he urged parents to bring up their children responsibly, in the aspects of spirituality and personality.
School headmaster Zaidi Abd Hamid, in his address earlier, expressed his gratitude to parents for attending the PTA meeting as they could get updates on the school and its performance.
“Please don’t turn away from events like this because they provide the best avenue for parents to give ideas on how to push the school towards greater heights,” he reminded.
More than 100 parents attended the meeting.
Outgoing PTA chairman Marni Rosli commended the association for using e-voting for this year’s election for office bearers, saying it was in line with the call by the Chief Minister for institutions to go digital.
