KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Teknologi Mara ( UiTM) is acknowledging the achievement of its 1,331 graduating students during its 90th convocation, staged at the Sarawak Campus’ Jubilee Hall here.

The ceremony commenced with the first two sessions yesterday, and continues today with the remaining two sessions.

This is done to accommodate the large number of graduates – 406 from degree programmes, and 925 from diploma courses. It is later learnt that 42 students are up for the Vice- Chancellor’s Awards.

Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, UiTM pro- chancellor Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar said the current digital era and the expansion of technology had opened numerous opportunities for UiTM graduates to explore entrepreneurship as part of their future careers.

“To encourage technology-based start-ups, future technopreneurs shall be equipped with a secured ecosystem that offers financial aid, advice on entrepreneurship as well as physical infrastructures.”

She also said the experience gained during their time in UiTM would serve as a foundation for them to expand their talents to the fullest potential, in order to remain competent in their respectively- chosen fields.

“To remain competent, especially on a global scale, graduates should identify their areas of expertise that in turn would benefit them, considering the fact that the advancement of today’s technology is based on productivity as well as industrial movements with high value-added activities,” said Zarinah.

UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Dato Dr Jamil Hamali was also present at the event.

Right after the conclusion of the first session of the convocation, the Bank Rakyat’s Debit-I Card for ‘UiTM Sarawak Alumni’ was launched outside the Jubilee Hall, witnessed by Zarinah and Jamil.

It is stated that the new debit card specifically serves to facilitate members of UiTM Sarawak alumni to make contributions to UiTM’s ‘Wakaf Ilmu’ (a type of education-welfare fund) via Bank Rakyat – a way for the former students to give back to their alma mater.

It is also learnt that the debit card is a collaborative project between UiTM and Bank Rakyat.
