UCTS in Blockchain MoU as part of new digital technology push
SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) achieved another milestone yesterday in its effort to embark on new digital technology, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding ( MoU) with NEM Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
UCTS vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the MoU sought to develop and coordinate collaborative research as well as educational and training projects related mostly to the Blockchain field.
“This is another milestone in terms of UCTS’ effort to embark on the new digital technology.
Under the Industrial Revolution 4.0, there are a number of technological breakthroughs such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber security, Internet of Things ( IOT) – and one of this is Blockchain.
“Blockchain will enable us to distribute information over the network and is very secure. By having this MoU, we would like to actually give students the latest technology with regard to their teaching and learning and final-year projects.
“They can even go for internship with this company ( NEM Malaysia),” he told reporters after the MoU signing ceremony at the university’s campus, here yesterday.
He said the second objective of the MoU was for UCTS to review its current curriculum and syllabus so that the university could embark on the latest technology with regard to Blockchain.
“Thirdly, and this is very important to us being a stateowned university, we want to work together with the state government to promote and give the right direction when implementing Blockchain for the state government.”
Khairuddin also pointed out NEM Malaysia as a company that specialises only in Blockchain.
Asked on UCTS’ future cooperation with NEM Malaysia, Khairuddin said for the next stage, the university hoped to have an open lab or system to enable students to have handson experience on how blockchain works.
“We also want to come up with a proposal for the state government to help them strategise and also to start working on implementing blockchain,” he added.
Khairuddin signed the MoU on behalf of UCTS, while NEM Malaysia was represented by its business development director Andy Roy Sian.
