BINTULU: Petronas subsidiary Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd ( MLNG) recently set up a mini library at SK Sungai Selad, Kuala Tatau to encourage early reading habit among the school’s 151 students.

The ‘ Mini Library’ project was implemented to support the Education Ministry’s National Reading Decade ( DMK) programme.

The library is stocked with books donated by MLNG and its staff. The books were carefully selected to meet the needs of the students especially in language up- skilling as well as to enrich the learning resources of the school.

The mini library launching ceremony, held last Saturday, was attended by Bintulu district education officer Fred Entau and MLNG chief executive officer Pau Kiew Huai.

Speaking at the ceremony, Pau said the objective of the programme is to encourage early reading habits among the students in the local community.

“As an organisation, our intention is to do our best to provide the best access to education to local communities in areas of our operation,” he said.

In conjunction with the launching, MLNG staff together with the school staff and students conducted a ‘gotong royong’ to clean and repair the school hostel.

MLNG staff also conducted fun learning activities for students such as colouring competition and motivational talk for students who will be sitting for their Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR) this year.

MLNG contributed bedroom and basic school essentials such as bed sheets, storage cupboards, towels, school bags and stationery sets for the students while Petronas contractor Kemudi Harta Sdn Bhd contributed 100 sets of wooden bed frames to the school.

The initiative is part of Petronas’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) to contribute to human capital development and community well-being in Sarawak.
