Astroturf hockey field in the offing for Sibu

SIBU: The Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has given positive feedback to an applicatio­n to build an astroturf hockey field for the Central Region here.

This was revealed by Assistant Minister of Educat ion and Technologi­cal Research Dr Annuar Rapaee at the closing of the Sibu 5 - a- side hockey tournament held at the futsal courts of Kampung Datu Baru from April 13-14.

Annuar said Sibu need such a facility as there are already three astroturf hockey fields located in Kuching while Sibu, Miri and Bintulu do not have any yet.

He added that Karim had told him to survey for a suitable location in Sibu.

“It is our hope that once the astroturf hockey field for Central Region is built it will bring back the era of hockey glory days and promote it as a favourite sport among youths here.”

Meanwhi l e , Sibu ( SBW) 96K, which is from the Sukun residentia­l area, beat Sejati Otai to emerge champion in the men’s category of the tournament.

BSHC Junior A team was third.

Sibu Jaya Hockey Club was the women’s champion followed by SMK Sebauh ( Bintulu) and Ex Methodist team.

The tournament, which was organized by Sejati Hockey Club in collaborat­ion with Kampung Baharu PBB Youth and PAJASA Sibu, attracted 10 men and 7 women’s teams.

The teams were from Sibu, Miri and Bintulu.
