Results of Indonesia’s election in Sarawak to be known today
KUCHING: Voting for Indonesia’s biggest election ( presidential and legislative elections) ended on April 14, but the counting process started at 8am yesterday.
The vote counting was done at the Indoor Stadium here with thousands of Indonesians from throughout Sarawak helping in the counting, which was expected to end at 9pm yesterday.
Head of Panitia Pemilihan Luar Negeri ( PPLN) Kuching, Adi Dewanto, said the vote counting process yesterday was smooth sailing.
The voting process, apart from the postal votes, for Indonesian workers in plantations and factories outside Kuching city, was facilitated on April 8 and 9, They voted through Mobile Ballot Box ( Kotak Suara Keliling).
Meanwhile, in Kuching city and nearby areas, 1,191 Indonesians voted on the last day of voting on April 14 at the Indonesian Consulate- General office in Jalan Stutong here.
“In total, we have 479 voting centres outside Kuching for workers in plantations, factories and shops throughout Sarawak.
“There are 1,400 Indonesians working and living in Sarawak who came to assist us, to go to the voting centres and collect the Mobile Ballot Boxes, seal and send them to Kuching, for counting,” Adi said when met at the counting of votes at the Indoor Stadium here yesterday.
He added that voter turnout in Sarawak was 54.50 per cent out of the 180,962 registered voters.
“Our national target is 50 per cent, and 54.50 per cent here is considered very good.”
The official result (for Sarawak) should be known by today (Thursday) but the overall results will be announced by Jakarta in a week’s time.
The vote for president is between the incumbent Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and a former general Prabowo Subianto.
The vice president pick for Widodo is Ma’ruf Amin while Subianto’s pick is Sandiaga Uno.
