Cook remanded in mischief by firecracke­rs case

MIRI: A Magistrate's Court here yesterday remanded a cook for two days on suspicion of throwing firecracke­rs into the compound of his neighbour's house.

The 53-year- old suspect from Kampung Luak, Jalan Bakam was ordered to undergo the remand at the Miri Central police station lock-up under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

When applying for the remand, investigat­ing officer Sgt Mohamad Sani Mohamad Nor said the suspect was arrested around 3.40pm on Monday (April 15) at his house in Kampung Luak.

The arrest followed a police report made by a Grab driver on Sunday (April 14).

In his report, the 26-year- old complainan­t said that around 1am the same day, his family was awoken by the loud sound of firecracke­rs in the compound of his house.

Two hours later, they were again disturbed by firecracke­rs thrown into their compound, believed to be by a neighbour.

According to the complainan­t, several other neighbours also made police reports on similar incidents.

Acting on informatio­n received, a team of police led by ASP Unang Giang arrested the suspect on suspicion of committing mischief by fire or explosive substance.

During the arrest, the police also confiscate­d two firecracke­rs, which had been modified, and two Crazy Robot brand firecracke­rs belonging to the suspect as case exhibits.

In his applicatio­n, Mohamad Sani said a four- day remand was needed on the suspect to enable investigat­ion papers made under Section 435 of the Penal Code to be completed.

However, Magi st rate Md Syafique Md Hilmie only allowed a two- day remand on the suspect, which will end today (April 18).
