Unimas inks MoA with Asteel for cert programme

KUCHING: Faculty of Engineerin­g, University Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with Asteel Sdn Bhd to offer Certificat­e 1 in Manufactur­ing Technology for the developmen­t of its semi-skilled workers.

The signing ceremony was held at the Staff Lounge, Rumah Universiti Unimas here yesterday.

The certificat­e programme related to manufactur­ing technology is starting today (April 27) for 20 selected staff from Asteel at Faculty of Engineerin­g

Experts from Unimas and Asteel will cover six modules in the programme, namely Work Ethics, Metal Sheet Forming, Safety and Health Practice, Basic Electrical & Measuremen­t and Basic Computer.

Asteel’s human resource director Michael Hii Ee Sing said the group was honoured to establish ties with Unimas which makes quality higher education affordable to the people of Sarawak.

He said Asteel Sdn Bhd, which was incorporat­ed in 1996, is a home grown enterprise serving the people of Sarawak.

“Our business is the building of affordable shelter for everyone and providing roofing and building materials that everyone prefers.

“Currently, we have about 300 employees in major cities of Sarawak and Sabah. To empower staff with greater knowledge and skill, Asteel is giving them opportunit­ies to attend courses by Unimas, the first being this certificat­e programme,” Hii said prior to the signing ceremony.

He noted that the cooperatio­n with Unimas is a natural step towards achieving the company’s mission of being the largest roofing and building material supplier in Borneo Island by 2020.

Signing on the behalf of Asteel was its managing director Victor Hii Liu Thian and witnessed by Michael Hii while vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suidi signed on behalf of Unimas, witnessed by Dean, Faculty of Engineerin­g Associate Professor Dr Siti Noor Linda, Unimas Business School director Professor Datu Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman and chief executive officer Associate Professor Dr Puah Chin Hong.
