About 70 women a end Weps dinner, dance the night away
MIRI: About 70 women a ended the Women Entrepreneurs and Professional Sarawak’s (Weps) dinner recently to have fun dancing the night away and also to realise Weps’ objectives.
Their president Dr Loh Yunn Hua, in her welcoming speech, said Weps, a non-governmental organisation ( NGO), set up in 1996, is a society for women enterprenueurs and professionals in Sarawak for business, social and personal networking.
“It is like an anti-ageing society as a woman has four happiness hormones: Endorphins for laughter and friendship; Dopamine for appreciation of each other’s achievements and contributions; Oxcytocin for physical signs of friendship like hand shaking and hugs; and Serotonin for contribution and sharing of ideas on business, food and happenings in our chat group.
It is a society for women to learn, appreciate and grow personally through courses and business networking. Members come from all races and professions,” said Dr Loh
During the dinner themed ‘Rock & Roll’ seven new members were inducted by the secretary, Lorna Morrison Singkang. They were mostly businesswomen Hartini Zailani, Cecilia Sman, Elizabeth Api, Caroline Guna, Weren Frida Lagak, Annie Sim, and Jasmine Ngu.
Dr Loh encouraged more professionals and businesswomen to sign up as members so that they ccould take part in various activities besides exchanging of ideas on how best to empower women in this digital era.
“Our next activity is a seminar on empowering women on Aug 28 in conjunction with Sarawak Women’s Day. It covers topics on health, security and safety,” she said.

Weps has 42 members including 25 life members.
Among other activities held at the dinner were humorous speech ‘fasten your denture’ by Dr Loh representing toastmaster club, solo Jive performance by Ashley Tiong, games, dances, lucky draw and best dress competition which was won by Teresa Hii (Weps deputy president).
A political secretary to chief minister Suzanne Lee, Miri Port Authority general manager and Weps treasurer Serawa Budol, Miri Petroleum Ladies Association (PWPM) president Srimurniyati Cranfield, Liz Durkin the wife of Simon Durkin managing director of Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB), and organising chairman Rita Lau were among those present.
