Man shot by police has records on drug, robbery cases

KUALA LUMPUR: The man injured in a shootout with police in front of a condominiu­m in Jalan Genting Klang here Friday night has criminal records for drug and robbery cases.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the suspect is also wanted for an assault case under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

Elaboratin­g on the shootout yesterday, he said policemen had stopped a Proton Iswara car with three men inside at about 8.30 pm.

“As police were checking them, the front passenger suddenly fired a shot at the police before all three suspects fled towards the main road,” he said.

“Police gave chase and one of the suspects was shot in the ensuing shootout. He was injured in the leg and body,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Police seized a 9mm semiautoma­tic HK USP pistol and 35 rounds of ammunition from the injured suspect.

“The suspect’s two friends escaped and police have launched a hunt for them. The injured suspect was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment,” he said.

Mazlan said the case is being investigat­ed under 307 of the Penal Code and Section 8(1) of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act. — Bernama
