KUCHING: More Sarawakians should participate in the ‘Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians (TOYM) Award’ programme, run by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia.

The incoming Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng, who was a TOYM honouree in 1995, said the award was mean to honour all those who took extraordinary steps to create positive impact to the communities around them.

He was happy to note that 20 per cent of the 114 nominees this year were from Sabah and Sarawak, versus around 10 per cent from 65 nominees last year.

“This (big) number is very encouraging, especially if we look at the ratio of East Malaysian nominees to the Peninsular Malaysians. I look forward to seeing more nominees in the future to reflect on the growing number of outstanding youths in Malaysia,” he said at the announcement of the 30 finalists here recently.

Speaking of his experience as a TOYM nominee 24 years ago, Wee said the award was beyond a mere recognition.

“It fuelled, motivated and catalysed my path towards greater achievement.

“Nothing could be more satisfying than having your passion validated and recognised by society, and it’s my fervent hope that you could celebrate your passion even be er than I did,” he told this year’s nominees.

Meanwhile, the TOYM Award 2019 dinner would be held for the first time in Kuching, taking place at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this Sept 14.

The award programme recognises those aged between18 and 40, whose dedication to their professions or life undertakings has resulted in exceptional achievements in the form of significant contributions to the progress or welfare of the community at large, and also to the advancement of their respective fields of endeavours.

JCI Malaysia national president Andy Lau Eng Leong said the award had been held annually since 1985.

He cited international actress Datuk Michelle Yeoh as one of the past winners.

He also said the winners would represent Malaysia at the ‘ Ten Outstanding Young Persons’ (TOYP) event during the JCI’s ‘Annual World Congress’.
