Big day for Waili, Teng and Phang at Sarawak Senior Golf tournament

KUCHING: Waili Abang of KGS became the seventh golfer to lift the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy at the 10th Sarawak Senior Amateur Closed Golf Championsh­ip which ended at Kelab Golf Sarawak ( KGS) in Petra Jaya yesterday.

The 56-year old former Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Masjid Negeri Sarawak manager (corporate) carded a two-day total of 10-over par 154 (78,76) to beat club mate Awang Sani Seruji by one stroke.

Abdul Aziz Sahari and Magit Semong made it a clean sweep of the top four spots by KGS after carding 159 strokes and 163 strokes while defending champion Herman Bulang managed a fifth placing with 164 after beating Michael Lee on count back (OCB).

In seventh to 10th positions were Abang Abdul Rahman (164), Kunjin Sandhu (169 OCB), Muas Sebli (169) and Ting Pang Won (170) respective­ly.

The nett title went to Simon Woon of KGS who returned a two-day total score of 136 beating club mate Chan Pak Seng to second place OCB.

Kuan Kim Long, also from KGS was third on 139 strokes.

Those finishing in fourth to eighth positions were Christophe­r Chang (141), Matthew Ng (142 OCB), Dahrawi Muhammad (142), Saadi Sama’on (142) and Valentine Hon (143).

Meanwhile, Masri Juni claimed the Age Group 55-65 years nett crown with his score of 144 strokes beating Peter Wong to second place OCB while Lim Sin Kiat was third with a 145 score.

The Age Group 66-75 years saw Kuan Kim Hiung (143), Tan Chek Khan (145) and Phang Nam Yong (146) claiming the top three while Peter Si Yuan Seng, former deputy chief minister Dr George Chan Hong Nam who is Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak Associatio­n (SGSS)president, and former president as well as current advisor Ting Kuok Ing were the top three winners of the Age Group 76 & Above category.

Daily gross winners were Wong Tai On (Day 1) and Bernett Ling (Day 2) while the daily nett winners were David Leong (Day 1) and Lawrence Law (Day 2) respective­ly.

It was an memorable occasion for the oldest participan­t in this competitio­n Andrew Teng, 90, as he also received a birthday cake and greetings from all.

For Phang Ted Hin of the Samarahan Country Club, it was also a day to remember as he became the first senior golfer to hit a hole-in-one at Matang Hole 3.

For his achievemen­t, Phang received a RM5,000 prize from the sponsor Datuk Philip Ting.

One hundred and thirty-two senior golfers KGS, SCC, Damai Golf and Country Club, Kelab Golf Miri, Kelab Golf Bintulu and Sibu Golf Club took part in the event.

SGSS will next be organising the Sarawak Senior Amateur Open for the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam Challenge Trophy from Nov 2 to 3 at KGS.
