KUCHING: The Sarawak Hornbill Veteran Association will be sending teams to compete in the 7th Asia Veteran Championships in Kunming, China from Sept 3 to 8 and the 28th Asean Veteran Championships in Chiangmai, Thailand from Oct 28 to Nov 3.

Representing the association in the Kunming tournament are the Age 50 and Age 60 teams led by vice president Chai Chong Fea and chairman Ting Tiong Hock while the latter will lead the Age 40, 50 and 65 teams team to Chiangmai.

The Chiangmai championships will be participated by more than 30 teams from nine Asean countries.

Sponsoring the teams to both events are honorary presidents Datin Amar Kathryn Wee and her son Richard Wee Liang Chiat.

The association’s other honorary president and executive advisor Michael Teo led a team of officials and players to pay a courtesy call on Kathryn Wee at her residence yesterday.

After offering prayers to the late Datuk Amar Wee Hood Teck, Kathryn presented the association flag to the teams and wished them good luck in their endeavours to win glory for Sarawak.

The various teams boast many former Sarawak players. Among them and spearheading the most senior team is Chua Bak Song who will be 80 soon. Prolific sharp shooter Chua, who attended national trials for the 1964 Olympic Games, used to thrill crowds in local basketball matches in the 1960s and 1970s. He would have scored even more points then but only for the three-point rule to be introduced much later in time!
