Police to charge woman for making false report

KUCHING: The police will take action against a 20-year-old woman who caused a stir in Sarawak yesterday when she lodged a false report claiming her sister and niece had been abducted at Jalan FAC Matang here.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commission­er Dato’ Dev Kumar M.M. Sree said, the woman lodged the report that her sister, 17 and her niece,10 were kidnapped will have to face the music.

“We have to take legal action against this woman to show the public the seriousnes­s of lodging false report,” said Dev at a press conference Gita Police station here, yesterday.

However, he added that the woman’s parents would not be charged because they were also misled by the false report.

He said immediatel­y after the false report was made the police sprang into action to track down the two men mentioned by the woman in her report.

“But after we did a thorough investigat­ion, we found that the woman had lodged a false report.

“The victims were never kidnapped but the sister of one of them was helping them to run away from home because they were said to have been abused by their aunt, that was the reason given by the woman,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police managed to track both girls who were both safe at a friend’s house before they were brought to Gita Police Station.

“This case was viral in the facebook which caused anxiety among the public, we were also worried because we have not heard such cases happening in Sarawak,” he said.

Meanwhile, the owner of a van claimed to be the vehicle used for the kidnap in a facebook posting had to go to the police to deny the accusation.
