Call to record Chinese tradition and culture for posterity
SIBU: The Chinese communities are urged to preserve and record their cultural characteristics through film, television and digital platform to increase awareness in the community.
President of Sarawak Chinese Cultural Association (SCCA), Albert Lau made this call at the closing ceremony of a carnival hosted by Mingchiang Tunhion Huay Sibu ( MTHS) held in a leading hotel here on Sunday night.
The two-day carnival featured a calligraphy competition, Chinese chess competition, table-tennis competition and Foochow dialect speech competition.
He said the association has Chinese from different ethnic groups and origins with different traditional customs.
“I hope that in this era of modernisation, everyone can still remember the ancestors,” he said. Albert who is also the advisor of MTHS recommended that Chinese ethnic groups record their traditional customs and the association would strive to collect written materials for posterity.
“Culture is a thing that can’t be touched. As the times progress, culture will change and even disappear.
“Although we are Chinese children born in Malaysia, we have always adhered to our traditions and customs for more than a century.
“It is important to educate the next generation,” he said, citing marriage as an example with many young couples influenced by the West
“The traditional wedding has disappeared in today’s society. This is very sad,” Albert added.
Also present were Sibu Resident Charles Siaw, president of Sarawak Foochow Association Datuk Wong King Hoong and chairman of MTHS Kapitan Lau Hieng Wuong.
