Marudi town filled with durian fruits

-

MARUDI: ‘Claude Town’, or Marudi town, is filled with the smell of durian, as the ‘ King of Fruits’ is literally sold at every corner and five-footway of shop buildings.

Of late, more of the ‘ Buah Isu’ (yellow durian) are on sale, indicating that the end of the durian season is near.

The fruits are sold at cheaper prices than the previous week – at RM8 to RM10 for a bundle of five.

Due to the large number, the ‘Buah Isu’ is also sold at RM8 or RM10 for a bunch of eight to 10 fruits.

The sale of durians is a common scene here because many people in the nearby areas of Sungai Stapang, Belasoi, Sungai Babi and Sungai Sebatang, and also Sungai Brit and Rumah Pemanca Randie Bundan have large durian orchards.

A seller, A Ramli Jackson Langgie Libau, said there was great competition between the sellers, prompting him to come up with ‘buy one, free one’ promotion for his bundles of durian and langsat fruits.

However, Malang Garit, 70, had a fixed price for the yellow durian at RM10 per bundle.

A woman from Sungai Belasoi said she was selling the fruits at RM8 per bundle, but offered a price of RM15 for two bundles.

This town is not only flooded with the durian, but also the langsat fruit which is priced at RM3 to RM5 per kilogramme.

Durians are still in great demand when brought down to Miri, where buyers would rush to the place wherever this fruit is being sold, such as Sungai Stapang longhouses. Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan (FAMA) Average Retail Prices Of SelectedCommodities In Kuching
