Speakers deliver messages of peace at convention

MIRI: To build a world of lasting peace, just apply a simple basic principle – live for the sake of others.

This was the basic message conveyed by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting recently, adding that anyone could begin the process of transforming the society, nation and world by applying this principle in their daily lives.

“The origin of happiness and peace lies in living for the sake of others.

“This is a time of new hope. “With the grace from above, surely as light overcoming darkness, an era of peace and prosperity will emerge from the depths of distrust and hatred.

“This will surely happen when we work together as one family,” he said.

Ting’s text- of- speech was read by Councillor Leslie Lau at the launch of the ‘ 14th Peace Loving Convention’ at Meritz Hotel here recently.

The event, themed ‘ The Key to Peace: Culture of Living for the Sake of Others’, was a joint project of Global Women’s Peace Network ( GWPN), Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development ( KPWKM) and Department of Women’s Development.

Also present at the convention were GWPN president Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie and political secretary to the chief minister Suzanne Lee Tze Ha, who was the event’s organising chairwoman.

“It is my deepest hope that all of you today would benefit greatly from the various interesting sessions that would be presented throughout the convention.

“Hopefully these would pulsate in each and every one of us here to move on to preach and practise the core values of living for the sake of others towards peace in Miri, Malaysia and also global peace,” Ting added.

Over 200 people a ended the convention, which featured three speakers.

Curtin University dean of students Dr Adeline Wong discussed the topic ‘Role of Women in Peacebuilding’, while Institute of Teachers Education Miri Campus’ Department of Educational Studies head Selvaraj Grapragasem gave a presentation on ‘ Family as School of Love and Peace’.

The third speaker Lt-Col Prof Abdul Razak Chik – a senior fellow of Institut Pemikiran Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (IPDM) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) – spoke about ‘Diversity and Unity: Religious Framework’.
