KUCHING: Two male suspects who were arrested in Batu Kawa on Aug 27 for allegedly cheating a 70-year-old man is remanded until Aug 30.

Padawan District police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan, who confirmed the case, said the suspects would be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

“They allegedly cheated the man of RM17,000 savings account,” said Aidil in a statement received here yesterday.

One of the suspects is a 63-yearold jobless man from Tabuan Laru who had been arrested five times in the past for cheating and once for going against his supervision order. The other one is a 54-year-old man from Jalan Tung Hua, Sibu.

They were arrested at the Batu Kawa Police Station around 3.30pm on Aug 27.

They were earlier confronted by members of the public after their victim saw them at a commercial centre in Batu Kawa.

According to the victim, he was approached by three men at a commercial centre in Sri Moyan, Batu Kawa around 10am on Aug 22. One of the suspects claimed that he had won a RM300,000 lottery but could not claim the prize as he is an Indonesian citizen.

“The suspect asked the man to claim the prize for him by first opening new savings account. They brought him to two different banks where he (victim) was told to open savings account,” Aidil said.

After that, the suspects told their victim to surrender the ATM cards and PIN number.

The victim only realised that RM17,000 had been debited from his savings account on Aug 26, which led to the police report.
