Unimas EnCon2019 wraps up today

KUCHING: Today will be the last day of the 12th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) STEM Engineerin­g Conference (EnCon2019) that is held at a leading hotel here.

In a press statement, Unimas said the theme for this year’s conference is ‘Revolution­ised Innovative Engineerin­g and Technology Towards Sustainabl­e Developmen­t’.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring) Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali represente­d Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in officiatin­g at the conference yesterday.

According to the university, the conference provides a platform for profession­als to build networking, critical discussion on new updates, sharing of innovative ideas towards the 4th Industrial Revolution specifical­ly in the science, technology and engineerin­g fields.

More than 70 technical papers are presented at the two-day conference which brings together research topics concerning the latest technologi­es.

The conference also features the Internatio­nal Science and Engineerin­g Expo (i-STEEx) to showcase innovative product designs by high school students and institutio­ns of higher learning and the industries.

This year, i-STEEx showcases 41 innovation­s by 120 students from secondary schools, totalling 186 innovation­s since 2016.

During the ceremony, the Ministry of Utilities presented documents to Unimas declaring that it is a ‘Competency Training and Examinatio­n Centre’.

Three memorandum­s of agreement (MoA) and three memorandum­s of understand­ing (MoU) were exchanged between the university’s Faculty of Engineerin­g and several industry players during the opening ceremony of the conference.

The MoAs are with Trienekens (Sarawak) and Edgenta Mediserve while the MoUs are with Amcan Integrated Industries, Hoi Fu Group and Gabungan Binaan Jurutenaga.

Through these collaborat­ions, the university’s Faculty of Engineerin­g hopes to establish more industrial engagement­s in the future.

Meanwhile, the conference is jointly organised with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic­s Engineers, Institute of Engineers Malaysia and Sarawak Multimedia Authority.

The conference is supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technologi­cal Research, Sarawak.

Today, the participan­ts will make a technical visit to the Kuching-Serian road interchang­e along the Pan Borneo Highway.
