- Philip Wong

SIBU: More than 400 athletes have registered for the Sibu Open Track & Field Championship to be held at Stadium Tun Zaidi on Sept 14 and 15.

They include a team each from Bukit Jalil and Terengganu, two teams from Sabah. The rest are from various parts of Sarawak.

Winners and record breakers will chase the total prize money of RM17,000.

The number of competitors pale in comparison to last year when nearly 1,000 athletes representing 65 teams from throughout the country took part.

“The poor response is due to the fact that Sibu and Mukah will have their separate inter-school athletics championships for U-14 and U-17 on Sept 18 and 19 respectively,” said Sibu Amateur Athletics Association (SAAA) secretary Ting Siew Nguong.

Events offering the cash incentives include the 100m (Open, Under-14 and Under-11 categories), 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles (U14 and U-11), discus (Open and U14), 800m (Open and U14), 400m (Open and U14), long jump (Open and U14), high jump (U14 and U11), 4x 100m Open (Open and U11), 3000m (Women’s Open), 5000m (Women’s Open) and the Super Men’s 100m (for runners weighing over 100kg).

The sponsors are KTS Sdn Bhd (100m Open, U14 and U18 categories and 800m), Ta Ann Holding Bhd (100m, U14 and U11), McDonalds (80m, 100m and 110 hurdles for U14 and U11), Hii King Leng Foundation (long jump for Open and U11), TN Sports (discus for Open and U14), Delta Leasing (400m Open and U-14), Smart (high jump Open and U14, U-11), Sibu AAA (4x100m relay Open and U14) and Hii King Leng Foundation (3000m and 5000m and Super Men’s 100m).

Each sponsor has contributed RM1,200 for the winners.

Ting said cash incentive for new records is RM50 for Open and RM20 for the U14 and U11 while the top three winners will also receive cash awards from RM300 to RM100, depending on the selected events.

For team events, the champion for Open in both Men and Women’s events will pocket RM500, runner-up RM300 and third placed RM200.

The champion for Boys and Girls U14 will receive RM300, runner-up RM200 and third placed RM100 while the champion for Boys and Girls U11 will take home RM200 followed by RM150 and RM100.
