SIBU: Members of Federation of Alumni Association of Taiwan Universities Malaysia (FAATUM) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Education Bureau visited former director-general of the Ministry of Health, Tan Sri Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Alumni president Datuk Lawrence Ting, SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong, Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) council member Dr Milton Lum, former alumni presidents Ngeow Yiing Yi and Javet Tay, were among those in the visiting entourage.

Dr Abu Bakar, who is now vice-chancellor of International Medical University Malaysia, told his visitors that he was surprised upon being informed that the dental degrees from seven Taiwan Universities were not duly gazetted.

Because of that, much hardship and anguish had been felt by Taiwan dental graduates since 2016. The seven schools are Taiwan University School of Medicine, National Defense School of Medicine, Yangming University School of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, China Medical University, Zhongshan Medical University, and Kaohsiung Medical University.

He said all procedures had been properly adhered to and he suggested that the alumni appealed to Malaysian Dental Council

Health.

Abu Bakar had led representatives of MMC, Malaysian Dental Council(MDC) and Malaysian Pharmacy Council (MPC) to conduct accreditation exercises on Taiwanese medical, dental and pharmacy courses.

Meanwhile, SUPP Education Bureau chairman Datuk Ding (MDC) and Ministry of Kuong Hiing and alumni members yesterday also visited former minister for health Datuk Chua Jui Ming, also in Kuala Lumpur.

Chua confirmed that the dental degrees of the seven dental schools in Taiwan were fully recognised in 1996 when he was the health minister.

The recognition gazetted, he added. must be
