Media can help promote Kuching, says mayor

KUCHING: Members of the media have been called on to help promote Kuching.

Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the media had the ability to indirectly influence thought processes and decision-making at all levels.

“As a result of your efforts, you can increase investment opportunities in Kuching and propel it as the tourism choice and business investment destination.

“It is my fervent hope, that both Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and all the journalist friends shall continue to work hand in hand to elevate the status and increase visibility of Kuching city and Sarawak – our beloved city, in the eyes of the world,” he said during the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) Reporters’ Day celebration on Friday.

Wee said he believed in the concept of ‘The Fourth Estate’.

“Journalists, reporters, and editors are the eyes and ears of every civil society. You play a crucial role in scrutinising governments, and at the same time serve as a solid bridge of communication between us, the authorities, and the people whom we vowed to serve.

“The Kuching South City Council is a local council and as such, is also the closest government organisation to the people.

“It is also one of the most important jurisdictions in Sarawak and it is even the pioneer for other local councils in Sarawak,” he said.
