Drivers urged to be extra careful during ‘balik kampung’ rush

-

KUCHING: More vehicles are expected on the road during the balik kampung rush over the Christmas-New Year period.

As such, Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu advised road users to adhere to the law and be more courteous on the road.

“Among the important aspects to remember is to always observe the speed limit of roads, such as the 90kmh limit on federal roads,” he said in a statement.

He called on drivers and codrivers to understand road signs that warn of what to expect up ahead, such as bumpy roads or a sharp bend.

“Also, do not stick to the right lane if you are not driving at a decent speed,” said Alexson, adding that the right lane is for overtaking.

He also called on road users to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them to allow for safe braking in times of emergencies.

“Car owners should also ensure that their driver’s licence, road tax and insurance are not expired. Also make sure to not use your handphone while driving,” said Alexson, adding that it is an offence along with not using the seatbelt and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“If there are police personnel or other enforcement agencies giving directions on the road, please obey their orders for your own and the safety of others,” he added.

He said prior to a long journey, drivers should ensure that their vehicles are road worthy.

Drivers are also advised to plan their journey and take a minimum 15-minute break along the route.
