SIBU: In a culturally diverse country like Malaysia, Christmas symbolises unity as it is an occasion to celebrate together, says president of Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) Temengong Dato Vincent Lau.

“Days around Christmas are filled with tremendous activities and joy,” Lau said in his address at YMCA Christmas Party cum children colourinng contest for some 250 children at SMK Sacred Heart Centenary hall here yesterday afternoon.

“It is YMCA’s proud tradition to celebrate Christmas with the people of Sibu and we have been organising Christmas caroling by the candle light since 1975 to promote the Christmas spirit and encourage fellowship among Christians from the various denominations in Sibu.

“We hope an event like this would also enhance peace and harmony among the people in Sibu,” he added.

He stated that YMCA is a community-based non-profit organisation dedicated to facilitate and promote spiritual, mental, physical and social development of individuals with special emphasis on young people to help them become responsible citizens.

He said the organisation welcomes everyone to join and work together to realise the objectives of the international YMCA.

“We are finishing the year cautiously optimistic and are happy to have forged many more links in community as well as within YMCA. We continue to celebrate the great work and provide support to those in need,” Lau concluded.
