Associatio­n preserves Chinese culture through lion, dragon dance

MIRI: Training the younger generation in lion and dragon dance could be one way to preserve the Chinese culture.

Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin lauded Miri Wai Sheng Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe Associatio­n for promoting lion and dragon dance which are synonymous with the Chinese culture in Miri for the past ten years.

“Seeing how Wai Sheng Lions and Dragon Dance Troupe Associatio­n has been doing a lot in introducin­g the Chinese culture to youngster through lions dance, their hard work deserves more than a pat on the shoulder (sic),” said Lee in his text of speech read by Temenggong Yong Vui Seng at the associatio­n’s 10th anniversar­y dinner last Friday (Dec 20) in a local hotel here.

The associatio­n’s co-founder and chairman Vincent Chee said Wai Sheng’s good reputation was made possible with the support from the local community and dedicated members.

“Our associatio­n has come a long way since its inception in 2009. For the past 10 years, our membership has grown from just a few people to a few hundred, including young trainees who train regularly with us.

“The support that we’ve received over the years are overwhelmi­ngly positive,” said Chee thanking sponsors for financial support especially to participat­e in competitio­ns.

Also present at the dinner were Senator Alan Ling represente­d by his assistant, Bryant Chin; Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting; Miri MP Dr Michael Teo represente­d by Steve Teo; Pujut assemblyma­n Dr Ting Tiong Choon represente­d by Peter Hee and the dinner’s organising chairman, Sia Sze Chong.
