KUCHING: State Reform Party Sarawak ( STAR) has described Tan Sri Datuk Dr Kamal Mat Salih, who quit from his post as the new Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) board of directors chairman, as ‘ a true gentleman’.

STAR president Lina Soo says she salutes Kamal for taking such a move.

“With his impressive credentials, he will be an asset to whichever university in Peninsular Malaysia that gets him.

“He is a gentleman and we wish him all the best in his future undertakings,” she said when commenting on Kamal’s statement about his resignation.

Soo hoped that Tan Sri Datuk Panglima Sulong Matjeraie would resume his duties as Unimas board chairman until the completion of his full term.

Sulong is reported to have had his three-year tenure terminated halfway to fit in with Kamal’s new appointment, effective Jan 1 for a term of three years.

Soo said the post must remain with Sarawakians, and reminded the Sarawak government that Sarawak had talents from the various communities.

“How about the next chairman in 2021 be a Dayak academic, as we have so many intellectuals amongst all races today?’ she suggested.

Soo said she would also like to congratulate Sarawakians, as they too would triumph if they were united to protect and defend Sarawak rights.

Kamal announced his resignation as board chairman of Unimas after his appointment was criticised by the Sarawak government.

“I heard from some parties that the Sarawak government wanted a Sarawakian. I think everyone knew that and they did voice their dissatisfaction over not being consulted on my appointment.

“I don’t want to be involved in any politics. I just wanted to contribute,” Kamal told Free Malaysia Today (FMT) on Monday.
