Piasau Tzu Chi recycling centre overloaded

- Cindy Lai

MIRI: Tzu Chi Miri is asking those who wish to send their unused items to its recycling centres, to do so either at the facilities at Lutong Baru or Taman Tunku instead of the one in Piasau.

It said in a press release issued yesterday that the recycling centre in Piasau has exceeded its capacity, resulting in donated items being le all over the place and making them the target of thieves.

“The current situation at the Tzu Chi Piasau Recycling Centre is due to items being sent there during the centre’s rest day. Bags have been cut open and the contents sca ered all over the place. We believe this is the result of thieves targeting the items,” Tzu Chi said.

It advised the public to send their items to its two other recycling centres during collection day, which is the fourth Sunday of each month.

It said all three centres have in fact exceeded their capacity, but that the situation in Piasau is the worst as it is located closest to the town centre.

Spring cleaning is believed to be one of the reasons for the surge in discarded items, it added.

The public is also reminded to separate all donated items to make it easier for volunteers to sort through them.

Tzu Chi’s Lutong Baru Recycling Centre, located at Jalan Bario, Kampung Pengkalan is open from 8am to 11.30am every Monday to Thursday.

The Piasau Recycling Centre is open every Tuesday and Friday from 8.30am to 11.30am.

Due to the coming Chinese New Year celebration, collection day for the recycling centres has been postponed till next month.

The centre in Lutong Baru will remain open until Jan 20 and resume operation on Feb 3, while the centres in Piasau and Taman Tunku will operate until Jan 21 before reopening on Feb 4.
