Longhouse folk advised to work with govt on choice of headmen

- Norni Mahadi

MIRI: Longhouse folk have been advised to work closely with the government when it comes to choosing their village chiefs and community leaders.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this is to ensure that only the best candidate is picked for the job, and that the person is able to work with the government in ensuring the smooth implementation of the development agenda.

“To me, handling the situation in selecting the best candidate for headmen or community leaders is a tough and timeconsuming process.

“That is why the appointment of a village headman has to be accepted by a longhouse or settlement, so that the longhouse folks will close ranks and support the legallyappointed headman,” he said.

Dennis said this in his address when presenting certificates of appointment to two village chiefs and a community leader for his constituency, at Telang Usan District Office recently.

The community leader is Penghulu Nawan Luhat for Apoh Tutoh area, while the village chiefs are Kampung Kayan Long Lama headman Paul Paren Ibau and Long Keliman @ Long Liam Keliman headman Usun Steward Ngau.

Their appointments are for a period of four years, starting

Dec 1 last year.

Dennis, meanwhile, reminded that anyone who wished to be considered for such post must first prove their capability, and leave it to the community leaders and relevant authorities to carry out due process.

He also reminded the people to work closely with their respective village security and development committees in areas such as improving the village economy, basic facilities and amenities, and many more.

Those present at the event included Telang Usan district officer Baru Tai, Temenggong Elizabeth Deng and Penghulu Ajeng Wan.
