Motorcyclists still ignoring designated lanes on highways

-

SHAH ALAM: Despite various reminders, by police including the issuing of summonses, that motorcyclists use the special lanes assigned to them on several highways in Klang Valley, the advice seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

A Bernama observation at the Federal Highway, found that while some motorcyclists are using the designated lanes provided by the authorities and highway concession companies, many are still risking their lives by riding on the main highway.

The same situation was seen at Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) and the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE) where motorcycle riders were using the main highways and competing with bigger vehicles such as cars and lorries.

It is now year 2020, yet the recalcitrant attitude of motorcyclists seemed to have not changed with some even boldly weaving in between cars and lorries.

Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Supt Azman Shari’at said motorcyclists were giving various excuses whenever they were stopped in enforcement operations on the highways.

“It is true some motorcycle lanes are not well managed but they are generally in good condition.

Some motorcycle riders are deliberately moving into the main highways simply to get to their destinations faster.

“Enforcement is still going on and motorcyclists would continue to be summonsed if they insist on breaking the law,” he told Bernama.

Azman also said sometimes police personnel have to take great risks to stop these errant riders and their antics on main highways.

He said it has long been established that motorcyclists faced a higher rate of fatalities on Malaysian roads and as such these road users should comply with regulations for their own safety.

Therefore, he said, the people are encouraged to put up more effective proposals to ensure motorcyclists use the special lanes for them in future.

“We are prepared to study any proposals which can bring motorcycle riders to use their special lanes and in the meantime, police would continue to enforce the existing laws,” he said. — Bernama
