Fertilizer embezzleme­nt syndicate busted

LAHAD DATU: Police have crippled a fertilizer embezzleme­nt syndicate with the arrest of seven men, including a foreigner, here on Monday.

District police chief ACP Nasri Mansor yesterday said all the seven suspects, including two lorry drivers, were detained while unloading the fertilizer at a warehouse in a plantation at Batu 4, Jalan Lahad DatuSandak­an.

Nasri said acting on a tip-off, his men raided the warehouse about 10pm and arrested seven men aged between 17 and 38.

“One of the suspects is a foreman at the warehouse and admi ed that he was approached by two lorry drivers to sell 1,200 sacks of fertilizer weighing 60 tonnes.

“Initial investigat­ion found that the fertilizer belonged to a company here and the lorry drivers were in charge of transporti­ng the fertilizer to a company in Keningau.

“However, the lorry drivers will stop at the warehouse, unloading the fertilizer to sell some of it and receive payment from the foreman,” he said.

According to Nasri, the lorry drivers would later continue to deliver the fertilizer to the destinatio­n.

following the arrest, they also seized 60.15 metric tonnes and 2,450 sacks of fertilizer from the two lorries and the warehouse which were estimated to be worth RM656,852.85.

The syndicate, he said, has been active since early 2018 and carried out embezzleme­nt two to three times a week. Police have also identified the owner of the warehouse and are tracking down the remaining members of the syndicate.

He added that all the seven suspects were remanded for further investigat­ion of the case under Section 407 of the Penal Code.
