MIRI: The new Batu Niah fire station is expected to be operational by next month.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Miri chief Law Poh Kiong said the new facility will be ready this month barring any unforeseen circumstances, and will be taken over in February.

“We want the station to be fully operational in February without further delay. That is why we have advertised the recruitment of auxiliary firefighters to add to the existing fire officers,” he told reporters after attending an event at the Lopeng fire station, here yesterday.

He said Bomba will be able to commence operation in Batu Niah immediately as its machineries are already at the station, adding that an ambulance and other utilities will be made available soon. He also said folks in Batu Niah have been eagerly waiting for the construction of the fire station to be completed.

“The areas currently being taken care of by personnel from the Lopeng and Miri fire stations are too large.

“With the new station in Batu Niah, we can better deal with any accident or incident,” Law said, while pointing out that the response time of firefighters would also improve with the new addition.

The Batu Niah fire station will cover areas from Bekenu to Kuala Nyalau. It comes with a quarters for staff, and will have 33 personnel including 27 auxiliary firefighters stationed there.

In urging local folk to join Bomba as auxiliary firefighters, Law said 150 people including 10 women have so far submitted their application since the advertisement was released.
