2 Sibu doctors confirm contracts renewed, awaiting documents

SIBU: The two doctors here who made the news recently after their contracts as medical officers were not renewed by the government, have received confirmation from the Health Ministry on the renewal of their contracts.

Dr Wong Woan Hui, 29, told The Borneo Post that she received the good news when she contacted the ministry yesterday morning, while Dr Bong Ing Hui, 30, said she was informed of the renewal before Chinese New Year.

“They told me that all affected medical doctors will have their contracts renewed,” Dr Wong said when contacted yesterday.

Both however said they are still waiting for the formal documents and letters pertaining to their contract renewal, and hope to receive it as soon as possible so that they can get back to their respective specialist programmes.

Dr Wong is training to become an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist while Dr Bong is undergoing a paediatrics specialist training.

They had to stop their training when their contracts were not renewed upon expiry last November.

Meanwhile, when asked, the pair said they were told of the length of their contracts but pointed out that a two-year

contract would not be enough for them to complete their specialist programme.

“Taking this programme does not mean that we are not working as medical doctors. We are working and at the same time undergoing training for this programme, which means we must pass exams, complete our papers and training.

“Completing a specialist programme takes time because there are papers involved and there are trainings involved. I think five years would be just nice,” Dr Bong said.

She added that the specialist programme will take at least four years and they must be trained in a government hospital under consultants and specialists.
