More than 40,000 self-employed individual­s contribute to SESSS

IPOH: An estimated 46,744 self-employed persons have registered for and are contributi­ng to the SelfEmploy­ment Social Security Scheme (SESSS), since it was introduced on June 1, 2017 until Feb 7.

Social Security Organisati­on (Socso) Benefits Division head Mohamad Fauzi Jaafar said among the sectors with the highest number of contributo­rs was the passenger transport sector which recorded 43,000 self-employed nationwide.

“Meanwhile, the second highest was the support services sector of 1,266 contributo­rs while the transport of goods and food sector recorded 330 contributo­rs to date.

“We hope more self-employed individual­s contribute under the scheme to be protected in the event of a disaster in their line of work including occupation­al illnesses and workplace accidents,” he said. individual­s

He said this when met by reporters after a briefing and dialogue session on the Self Employment Scheme to the hawkers’ associatio­ns in Perak at the Industrial Training Institute here yesterday.

Since Jan 1 this year, Socso has expanded its SESSS to 19 informal sectors including agricultur­e, livestock breeding, forestry, fisheries, manufactur­ing, constructi­on, online business and data processing. — Bernama
