State Junior Closed 1st Leg winners decided last Sunday

KUCHING: Chong Cheong Yong Training Centre emerged as the biggest winner at the Sarawak Junior State Closed 1st Leg that ended last Sunday.

They captured three out of the 12 categories contested at the Sarawak Badminton Associatio­n (SBA) Hall along Jalan Lapangan Terbang.

Siti Nursuhaiza Suhaimi, the 3/4 seed, upstaged number two seed Lee Zi Suen of Kuching Badminton Associatio­n (KBA) 1321, 21-16, 21-18 to take the Girls U16 singles title.

Audrey Vanessa Chee partnered Brenda Lai Qiang Tung to upset top seeds from KBA Chin Huey Xing and Lee Zi Suen in straight sets of 21-16, 21-13 in the Girls U16 doubles final.

In the Girls U12 singles final, top seed Genevie Lim Tsin Yeen easily disposed of surprise finalist Venice Goh of KBA 21-5, 21-7.

Genevie Lim capped a double win when she partnered Wendy Feebie Ricky of KCH(EBC) to beat SBA’s pair of Brenda Jong-Megan Tan Zhi Yi in the Girls U12 final.

CCY also had some cheer in the Girls U14 doubles final when Ashreney Kho combined with MBA’s Angel Chin to beat Nurin Izzah Qistina Norman (SBA) and Sharon Wong (KBA) 21-9, 13-21, 2111.

Goh Soon Huat of Pacific Badminton Management lived up to his top billing in the Boys U16 singles to beat SBA’s 5/8 seed Felix Fong Jia Liang 21-9, 18-21, 218 in the final.

KBA bagged one title after its pair of Ashley Chua kai Quan and Jeremy Juan Zhen Liang narrowly defeated the combined pair of SBA’s Felix Fong Jia Liang and MBA’s Jasper Lim Fung 2119, 26-24 in the Boys U16 doubles final.

MBA’s Levia Kho En Qi lifted the Girls U14 singles crown by overcoming SBA’s Nurin Izzah in the final.

Other champions included Bernard Russell (Boys U14 singles), Dexter Ong Shang ZherkRonne­y Leo Jameswell (Boys U14 doubles), Isyraf Hafizan Ibrahim (Boys U12 singles) and Alwyn Chua Kai Xu-Isyraf Hafizan Ibrahim (Boys U12 doubles).
