Gastronomy one way to attract tourists — Mayor

MIRI: Gastronomy experience has proven to be a way to attract tourists to a place, thus food and beverage industry players here should offer more variety of local cuisines that represent Miri and its colourful culture.

Mayor Adam Yii, who was one of the invited guests to the Miri Chefs Associatio­n’s Chinese New Year dinner gathering on Monday at a restaurant here, has suggested that good food would be an ideal attraction for Miri and it needs the creativity and cooperatio­n from the industry players to make it happen.

“Food tourism has become a trend among travellers, whereby it is composed of activities that provide experience­s of consumptio­n and appreciati­on of food and beverages.

“Miri, I believe, has a lot to offer in terms of the diversity of food with the value of history and culture that evolve around it.

“More importantl­y, it is an opportunit­y for the local players to showcase the best part of Miri and their culinary skills,” said Yii.

Keeping their premises hygienic and clean should be made priority at all times to give a good impression to customers and tourists, Yii stressed.

premises over dirty ones. It would be good to put in extra effort to keep your premises clean at all times,” he said.

Also attending the dinner gathering were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, the associatio­n’s chairman Yong Wan Khiong and the event’s organising chairman Law Ngeok Fong as well as members of the associatio­n.

After the opening ceremony, Ting and Yii were joined on stage by the committee members to present education incentive to members’ children who excelled in their studies and distribute­d angpows to senior members.
