New police commissioner outlines three priority areas for Sarawak

- Jeremy Veno

KUCHING: New Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail has outlined three major areas for police to prioritise to ensure Sarawak will remain safe and peaceful.

He said the three areas of focus are eradicating all types of crime, organising more community policing programmes, and to upgrade integrity and service delivery.

“The first is always to eradicate crime, especially drugs and illegal gambling activities, which can bring a negative impact on society, especially among the youths,” he said in his speech following a welcoming parade for him.

Aidi took over on Tuesday (Feb 18) from Datuk Ramli Din, who has been transferred to Bukit Aman as Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director.

He said police in Sarawak should not rest on their laurels but instead work to gain as much information as they can on criminal activities to act on.

He noted the modus operandi of criminals is ge ing more complex, making it vital for the police to constantly improve and update themselves.

On the second area of focus, he said each member of the force needs to further improve personal discipline and selfimage to gain the trust and confidence of the public.

“Personnel should also enhance their cooperation with each other and work as a team to face the various challenges in policing duties,” he added.

Aidi stressed community policing programmes should be held in every police district on a regular basis.

“Such programmes are not only to bridge the gap between the police and community, they will also create a police omnipresence in an area,” he said.
