Wong comes up big for 2,600 Bawang Assan families

- Jane Moh

SIBU: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has spent the equivalent of 12 months of his assemblyman’s salary to purchase food and other essentials for 2,600 families in his Bawang Assan constituency.

The goods, comprising rice, cooking oil, instant noodles and sugar, were meant to help lighten the burden of families during the movement control order (MCO) period.

PSB Bawang Assan Bumiputera Unit chairman Andrew Shilling said the aid would be distributed to all longhouses and villages in the constituency.

“This aid will be given to every family in this constituency regardless of their political beliefs.

“It is hoped that through this assistance, we can help to lighten the load of the people especially those from the low income group, those who cannot go to work and those who lost their source of income during this MCO period,” he told reporters prior to the distribution process here yesterday.

Also present were Penghulu Richard Ampi, Kapitan Chin Su Ming and PSB Bawang Assan branch member Wong Hii Ping.

According to Shilling, yesterday’s distribution was to families in Pasai, Mas, Sungai Bidut, Sungai Langgup and Bukit Besai.

This will be followed by families in Sungai Banyok, Sungai Pinang, Bungan, Rassau, Tutus and Sebedil today; Bawang Assan, Sungai Tebelian, Tanjung Bekakap, Sungai Apong and Sungai Melanggan on April 2; and

Tanjung Penasu, Batu Burak and Rantau Panjang on April 3.

“This assistance shows the sensitivity of Wong towards the longhouse folk and the people of his area who are affected during the MCO,” Shilling added.

Meanwhile, Wong in a press statement said he was trying his best to help his constituents, especially those from the more than 100 longhouses in Bawang Assan.

“Even though I am no longer part of the present government and have no access to Minor Rural Project ( MRP) funds, I remain dedicated to helping the 2,600 families within my means,” he said.

He added that similar assistance would be extended to some 2,000 non-Bumiputera families in his constituency at a later date.
