Man jailed 8 years for causing hurt during robbery
SIBU: A 22-year-old man was sentenced to eight years’ jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt when robbing a security guard.
Nelson Tungku was charged under section 394and 397 of the Penal Code. Section 394 provides for a jail term which may extend to 20 years and shall also be liable to a fine or whipping while Section 397 provides for a fine or whipping upon conviction.
Prosecuting in Judge Caroline Bee Majanil’s court was DPP Mohamad Arif Aizuddin Masrom while Nelson was unrepresented.
According to the charge sheet Nelson robbed a security guard, Ingkan Nabau, 65, while armed with a Swiss knife, and robbed him of his smartphone at the multi-storey car park at Sibu Central Market at 4.19pm on
March 21.
Corporal Mohd Rezza Saadon from police headquarters here received a call from a civilian named Ninian Gelau, 27, at 4.24pm on the same day that Ingkan had been stabbed and injured during a robbery.
A police party rushed to the scene at 4.27pm and immediately secured the place. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Ingkan told them that he had been stabbed and his smartphone taken away.
Meanwhile, a CCTV footage showed that the suspect ran away using the staircase.
At 6.30pm, the accused was found hiding in a water tank room at Level P4 of the Central Market.
He was subsequently arrested and the smartphone and the knife used in the robbery attempt were found on him.
