SK Kpg Bulau uses WhatsApp to connect with pupils during MCO

-

MIRI: Various approaches have been taken to ensure that students’ education is not compromised although schools are closed due to the movement control order (MCO) to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Teachers of SK Kampung Bulau in Bekenu, for example, are using existing technologies to keep in touch with parents to ensure their children would continue to study and do their homework at home.

Its headmistress Anita Othman said this could still be done during the MCO if parents gave their full commitment and cooperation.

“Although many of them do not have internet access to Google Classroom, the WhatsApp application could be used instead.

“We (the teachers) do not give homework to burden the parents to print their finished work. Using WhatsApp will do. They can refer to their existing textbooks and activity books. When it comes to reading, teachers will ask parents to send the children’s videos. We also understand that many parents have to work during the MCO.

“What is important is that students can continue to study and do their homework which must be reviewed by the teachers through the app before it is shared,” she said when contacted yesterday.

SK Kampung Bulau, about 45km from Miri, has 26 pupils and seven teachers, including Anita.

Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni in his Facebook page yesterday posted pictures of SK Kampung Bulau pupils obeying the MCO. Anitasaid it was a project the pupils had been working on at home over the past two weeks.

“In fact, the parents are so helpful in this project. The teachers just monitor and help in whatever is needed only,” she said.

She added that the project was a combination of Visual Art, Bahasa Malaysia, English and Science subjects, which is also an initiative of Subis District Education Office to promote creativity of teachers and pupils.
