Man who stole church money gets 9-month jail

SIBU: A 40-year-old man who broke into a church pastor’s office and stole RM900 was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to undergo nine months in prison.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura read the sentence after accepting the accused’s guilty plea.

Tony Asok of Sarikei was charged with committing theft at a church pastor’s office at Jalan Pulau at around noon on April 24.

The offence is punishable under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides for an imprisonme­nt term of up to 10 years and/or a fine.

According to facts of the case, at about 3.30pm on May 5 at the pastor’s office, the money donated by the public amounting to RM900 that was kept in the drawer, was found missing.

Upon inspection, the CCTV recording showed that at around noon on April 24, Tony broke into the pastor’s office.

At 9.50pm on May 15, at Jalan Tan Sri, a team of police arrested the man and seized from him a slingbag, a black jacket and a black cap.

The CCTV recording showed the seized items were the same as those used by the man who committed the breakSarin­a in.
