More retrenched workers seek Socso’s online training since MCO

-

KUCHING: Social Security Organisation (Socso) has seen a notable increase in requests for online training from retrenched workers since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented on March 18.

Socso said it has received nearly 300 applications for training from retrenched workers through its Employment Insurance System (EIS) with 197 currently undergoing training online.

The EIS offers up to 250 training courses online, of which 75 training courses have job placement programmes.

“The government, in the Economic Stimulus Package announced on Feb 27, has raised the training fees under the EIS for laid off workers from RM4,000 to RM6,000, while the Training Allowance has been increased from RM10 to RM30,” said Socso Employment Insurance Office chief Datuk Mohd Sahar Darusman in a statement issued from Kuala Lumpur.

He said between Jan 1 and May 17, the EIS received more than 27,800 applications for EIS benefits from workers who had lost their jobs.

“Under the Employment Insurance Act 2017, the EIS provides six types of benefits namely Job Search Allowance, Early Re-Employment Allowance, Reduced Income Allowance, Training Allowance, Training Fee, and the Re-Employment Placement Programme.

“The EIS has more than 40,000 training courses that are tailored to industrial demand specifically for retrenched workers registered with the EIS.

“The courses offered are based on partnership with training providers from the public and private sectors,” he said.

As most of the training centres are closed for operations and converted into quarantine centres during the MCO, Mohd Sahar said Socso took the proactive step to enable retrenched workers to undergo online training courses at home.

“The organisation is embracing a new norm in the implementation of Active Labour Market Policies, where Socso is the first agency under the Ministry of Human Resources to conduct e-training programmes and virtual career fairs,” he said.

Laid off workers registered with the EIS are urged to apply for EIS financial benefits as well as assistance in training and reemployment programme through www.perkeso.gov.my.

Training providers with courses that meet industrial demands are also welcomed to register with the SIP Training Plus programme by registering at https://eis.perkeso.gov.my/ eisportal/trainingProvider/login.
