Walikota: Covid-19 a wake-up call
KAPIT: The Covid-19 pandemic is an opportunity for Kapit District Council (KDC) to rebuild and transform itself to be a better organisation, says its chairman walikota Lating Minggang.
Chairing the second quarter full council meeting via Zoom on Thursday, he said Kapit is categorised a green zone with no positive Covid-19 case reported in the division, and he wanted it to stay that way.
He said the pandemic was indeed a wake-up call for the council, and therefore it is important that they are united in responding to it.
“The question is, are we are up to it,” he asked at the meeting which was also attended by secretary Jabang Juntan, deputy secretary Kelimbik Sibat and all sectional heads.
“Despite great scientific and technological advances in recent decades, the virus has even brought first world countries, like the US and several European countries to their knees. What can we (KDC) a small organisation do to handle the crisis?
“The pandemic has exposed the fragility not just in our health system, but also in smaller organisations like us, being the government front liners.
“But we have responded fast and had followed the MCO and the CMCO guidelines strictly. Thus, Kapit is until today a green zone.
“In the council, we need to revisit not only all our projects but also to look at things like outstanding assessment rates, and come up with ideas on recovery plans.
“Our outreach community programmes also need to be revamped and done differently.
New ideas are needed so that we can still carry out our community projects effectively.”
The CMO and CMCO had proven to work, and brought in social discipline to our culture, he added.
