Duo nabbed in separate busts, drugs worth RM8,500 seized
BINTULU: Two men were arrested Sunday in separate police operations after they were found in possession of drugs.
District police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili said the first raid took place at Kampung Dato around 3.30pm, involving a foreign national.
“The suspect tried to escape by jumping into a river, but was later apprehended by the police team led by Inspector Nicholas Golibin.
“A search of the suspect’s pockets produced cigarette pack containing 16 transparent plastic packets containing substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing about 62 grammes and worth an estimated RM6,500,” he said in a statement.
The suspect, he added, possessed a criminal record for a drug-related offence in 2018.
“We are investigating him under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking in narcotics. If convicted, he faces the mandatory death penalty,” Zulkipli said, adding the suspect is also being probed under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
On the second arrest, the OCPD said it involved a 37-yearold local who was picked up from a house in Kampung Jepak around 11.30pm.
He said the operation led to the discovery of two plastic packets containing dried leaves believed to be cannabis, weighing about 83 grammes and worth an estimated RM2,000.
The suspect, who did not have a police record, was later tested positive for drugs.
“The case is investigated under
Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries an imprisonment of not less than five years or life, and not less than 10 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
“He is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not more than RM5,000 or not more than two years’ jail and two years under police supervision, if convicted,” said Zulkipli.
