SM Wong Nai Siong ready to reopen with SOP in place, says principal
SIBU: SM Wong Nai Siong here is fully prepared to resume classes and is just waiting for the announcement by the federal government for schools to reopen, said its principal Lu Yew Hiiung. “We have already prepared for the proposed standard operating procedure (SOP) including marking social distancing in class as well as hand sanitising for students before entering the school or classes. “We are just waiting for the announcement and if for example, schools are allowed to resume classes on June 9, then there is no problem for us. We can start all classes immediately for morning and afternoon sessions,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday. Lu said the school has also rearranged the timetable for classes, divided classes into morning and afternoon sessions, and will also limit the period length for each subject. “Our facilities such as the canteen and washrooms have also been made SOP-compliant,” he added. Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah on May 28 said the government is expected to make a decision within the first week of June on whether to allow more sectors in the country, including schools, to reopen. He said the decision would be dependent on the rate of Covid19 infections recorded during the current festive season until next week. Meanwhile, Lu said teaching for all classes was conducted online since the start of the Movement Control Order on March 18. SM Wong Nai Siong currently has a student population of 850 with 25 classes ranging from Junior One to Senior Three, as well as catering for students sitting for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
