‘Gawai still able to bring people together amidst CMCO restrictions’

MIRI: Those who are able to celebrate Gawai Dayak this year with their loved ones should count their blessings in that there are many others who are not as fortunate as they are.

In stating this, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak commissioner Jofri Jaraiee believes that it is a very different celebration this year, in view of the current Covid-19 situation and the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that is necessitated by it.

“The Gawai mood in Sarawak this time is different, as we are still battling to break the chain of infection.

“Nevertheless, we thank God for giving us the opportunity to continue enjoying life in this world.

“In saying this, we must also remember the other Sarawakians who have fallen victim to the pandemic,” he said in his Gawai message yesterday.

On a more positive note, Jofri encouraged everyone – Dayaks and non-Dayaks alike – to continue using Gawai as a platform for them to know the culture and traditions of various sub-groups within the Dayak community.

“Use technology and also this opportunity to strengthen your relationship with other communities.

“This is the uniqueness of Sarawak – its people celebrate all festivals together.”

Meanwhile, Jofri reminded everyone to always observe the standard operating procedures outlined by the authorities during this festive season.

“Just as we are committed to preserving our religions, customs and culture, we must also adhere to any directive given by the government as they are meant to protect us.

“Take care of your families and those close to you. The sacrifices that we make today are for the benefit of our future and also the generations to come,” he added.
