Covid-19 calls for Gawai celebration to be culturally-revolutionised, says MP
MIRI: Gawai is not just an event to celebrate bountiful harvest, but it should also continue to become a medium to foster closer ties among all Dayak and non-Dayak communities.
Lubok Antu MP Jugah Muyang says the Covid-19 pandemic and the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) necessitated by it have further intensified the need for people to be more united than ever.
“This year’s Gawai celebration should be culturallyrevolutionised to appreciate our economic resources, because Covid-19 has not only prevented us from freely carrying out our daily routines, but it has adversely affected many economies and the livelihood of many people around the world. Therefore, we need to start saving; to start celebrating Gawai Dayak in moderation and simplicity. This will ensure financial prudence, which would be good for our economy,” the parliamentarian said in his Gawai message yesterday.
Jugah said many people would have known by now that this year’s celebration would not be as festive as those in the past.
“In our enthusiasm, we must not forget about the health aspects such as proper social distancing or the wearing of face masks
“As the nation’s economy is still not stable, everyone must plan ahead and make sure that their health, safety and welfare as well as those of their families would not be jeopardised. We must accept this reality.
“For those unable to celebrate Gawai Dayak with their loved ones due to the CMCO, I hope you would remain vigilant and always adhere to the standard operating procedures meant to prevent further spread of Covid-19. We can still keep in touch with our loved ones through means such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and various online apps,” said Jugah, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president.
In his message, the MP also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all the frontliners, who had been working hard over the past three months.
“All of you frontliners are the best. Your sacrifices and contributions are priceless,” he said.
